Springtime is here and you know what that means. It’s time to throw out those filthy fast food cups, wipe down that dusty dashboard and let in some fresh air to dispel that smell that’s been bothering you for the last 3 months. Yes, it’s time for some spring cleaning and we want to share six simple tips using common household items to properly clean your car interior without a fuss. Let’s start with the ceiling.
1. Ceiling: If the ceiling of your vehicle is made out of fabric material, wiping it too hard with a wet cloth may cause some fuzz. You want to make sure you use a slightly damp washcloth made out of superfine fibers and you can add a bit of neutral detergent as needed.
2. Dashboard: You can wipe the dashboard down with a washcloth and use a car brush or toothbrush to dust any hard to reach spaces.
3. Handles & Steering Wheel: Many cars have leather handles, so you may be tempted to use household leather care products, but it’s not advised. These can make your steering wheel slippery and hinder you from having a good grip. We recommend keeping a dry cloth in your glove compartment to wipe it down every now and then.
4. Heater: Use a dry cloth and cotton swabs to easily access those narrow vent spaces. It’s good to clean these areas to help prevent any allergies and respiratory ailments caused from too much dust.
If you smell something foul when turning on your heater – It could be fungus or a special surprise from a skunk. Mix some mustard powder in warm water and spray it into your vents. Afterwards, run your heater on the strongest mode for 4-5 minutes. This is a very effective way to eliminate odor.
5. Car Seats: Car seats are often the culprit of unpleasant stenches (Think about all the spills, pets and people that have been in your car). You can certainly use various products to clean your seats, but as the saying goes, ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,’ so try to wipe down seats often. Leather seats are easier to clean with a damp cloth and a bit of neutral detergent. For fabric seats, spray water mixed with a neutral detergent and wipe down the seats with a damp cloth, followed with a dry cloth. Make sure to keep the windows down to allow the upholstery to dry completely.
6. Car Floor Mats: For rubber, simply spray it down with soapy water and wipe, and for fabrics, you can always use your household vacuum.

Commemorated on every 5 June since 1972, WED has grown to become the most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. WED activities take place year round as a worldwide call to action for individuals and organizations to mobilize environmental activities. This year Kia will award an eco-friendly vehicle to five participating organizations whose WED activity mobilization scores high on criteria as evaluated by UNEP.
The five vehicles to be awarded include four 2012 all-new Kia Rios and one 2012 Kia Optima Hybrid, which were chosen for their high fuel efficiency and to highlight 2012’s WED theme ‘Green Economy: Does it include you?’
“Through participation in environmental partnerships such as with UNEP we aim to support steadfast efforts to solve global environmental challenges,” said Soon-Nam Lee, Director of Overseas Marketing, Kia Motors Corporation. “This year’s ‘Green Economy’ theme strongly resonates with our core environmental management objectives of achieving low carbon emissions, resource efficiency and placing the environment at the forefront of all our business activities.”
The signing ceremony was attended by Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of UNEP; Izabella Teixeira, Brazilian Environment Minister and MK Kim, President of Kia’s Middle East and Africa Regional Headquarters.
“I would like to thank Kia for their support, and we look forward to awarding five new vehicles to grassroots groups and organizations that are making notable strides towards a green economy. We hope these vehicles will further the important work they are doing and encourage all groups in any region to participate,” said Steiner.
Over the past month, Kia has emphasized its support for UNEP and WED via its online campaign ‘Kia Likes Caring,’ which is hosted on the company’s official Facebook page. The ongoing campaign aims to encourage participation and magnify awareness of Kia’s social responsibility programs across its 1.6 million plus fan base. Fans are able to indicate their support for several causes by sharing “Kia Likes Caring” badges on their profiles, and 100 lucky participants were selected earlier this month to receive official WED T-shirts for showing their support.

Building off the turbocharged Optima SX trim, the SX Limited uses the SX's 274-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Unique features include a chrome-accented spoiler, lower doorsills, red front-brake calipers and 18-inch chrome wheels. Trim-exclusive colors include Ebony Black, Snow White Pearl and Titanium Metallic.
Inside, the new trim gets unique wood surfaces, black or white Nappa leather seats and interior pieces, and a more premium headliner than the other versions. Interestingly, there's also a first aid kit in the cabin.
Production will begin soon at Kia's plant in West Point, Ga., and sales should start next month. Kia didn't mention a specific price, but executives said it would start "under $35,000 including destination."

If you were raised by wolves before being brought back into society as an adolescent, you may not get the tie-in that Kia is trying to make with its Super Bowl ad for the Kia Optima, titled "A Dream Car For Real Life."
In popular folklore, the sandman visits us each and every night, sprinkling magic sand on our eyes to ensure a smooth trip to dreamland. Criminal trespass overtones aside, it stands to reason that sprinkling too much sand on a sleeping person could have unintended consequences.
In the case of Kia’s latest amusing and over-the-top big game ad, those consequences include supermodel Adriana Lima waving a checkered flag, 1980s hair band (and new Vegas regulars) Mötley Crüe performing live, pro bull rider Judd Lefew wrangling a giant rhino and a lumberjack sawing into the world’s largest hero sandwich.
Those certainly wouldn’t be our innermost desires, nor would we choose the otherwise excellent Kia Optima for turning hot laps on a racetrack. Throw a bucket of magic sand on our head, and you’ll likely get images of Sabine Schmitz, a BMW M3 CSL and the Nürburgring Nordschleife, with perhaps some catered barbeque.
That’s probably why we don’t write dream-sequence commercials for major advertisers. Still, things work out well for the characters in Kia’s ad, and we’ll admit that it made us crack a smile. It may not be the best 2012 Super Bowl commercial we’ve seen to date, but it’s certainly near the top of the list.
